Public Information Statement

Statement as of 8:20 PM CDT on May 11, 2008

... Tornado surveyed in Lonoke... prairie and Arkansas counties...

A team from the National Weather Service in Little Rock surveyed
tornado damage across portions of Lonoke... prairie and Arkansas
counties today... including the damage that occurred in Stuttgart
Saturday evening.

A tornado tracked from 3.5 miles southeast of Humnoke /Lonoke
County/ to 3.4 miles northeast of Almyra /Arkansas County/. This
included the area in the southern part of the city of Stuttgart...
where the tornado tracked for about 2 miles within the city limits.
The path length was 21.3 miles long.

The tornado has been rated an EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. Nine
people sustained injuries in Stuttgart. All but one of the injured
have been released from the hospital. Within the city of
Stuttgart... approximately 200 homes and 50 businesses sustained
significant damage. A nursing home... several churches and school
buildings were also damaged.

An interesting note... several camera crews from the discovery
channel accompanied storm chasers that followed the tornadic storm
during its lifecycle. An additional camera crew filmed at the
National Weather Service office in Little Rock to document warning
operations.

Also... one of The Chase teams was from the University of Oklahoma
which included the Doppler on wheels /Dow/. The Dow is a portable
research Doppler radar mounted on a truck used to study small scale
features of tornadic storms. The Dow system managed to obtain data
from the storm system as it moved through Stuttgart.

The survey today was conducted by John Robinson... warning
coordination meteorologist... and renee fair... meteorologist in
charge... both with the National Weather Service in Little Rock.
