Fire Weather Warning, Fire Weather Watch

Statement as of 11:49 AM MDT on May 20, 2008

... Red flag warning in effect from 10 am to 9 PM MST Wednesday...
... Fire Weather Watch in effect from Thursday morning through
Thursday evening...

The National Weather Service in Tucson has issued a red flag
warning... which is in effect from 10 am to 9 PM MST Wednesday. A
Fire Weather Watch has also been issued. This Fire Weather Watch
is in effect from Thursday morning through Thursday evening. The
Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect.

A strong upper level disturbance over the Pacific northwest will
drop south through the Great Basin and into northern Arizona by
Wednesday afternoon. This will result in widespread very strong
and gusty southwest winds Wednesday over all of Southeast Arizona.
Expect sustained 20-foot wind speeds ranging between 20 to 35 mph
with gusts as high as 50 to 55 mph. Wind speeds are expected to
enter into red flag criteria by 11 am for locations within Cochise
and Santa Cruz counties while waiting until noon to affect the
remainder of fire weather zone 148. Maximum wind speeds are
expected around 5 PM MST... then drop somewhat as the evening
progresses... however wind speeds will remain increased overnight
with some locations in Cochise County still seeing winds exceeding
red flag criteria. Due to the dry air overhead... relative
humidities will be quicker to meed red flag criteria with isolated
locations dropping below 15 percent by 9 am MST... but more
widespread by 10 am MST.

This combination of strong and gusty winds... a dry airmass in
place across the state and a very high to extreme fire
danger... have resulted in a red flag warning effective 10 am MST
Wednesday morning through 9 PM MST Wednesday evening for fire
weather zone 148 (cochise... Santa Cruz... eastern Pima... southern
Greenlee and Graham counties).

While moisture associated with this low will filter into most of
Arizona by Thursday... Santa Cruz and Cochise counties may see
insufficient amounts to raise their minimum relative humidity
values Thursday afternoon above the 15 percent threshold. Given
that strong and gusty winds are still expected for these areas
Thursday... a Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Santa Cruz and
Cochise counties within fire weather zone 148 for Thursday morning
into Thursday evening.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions
are either occurring now... or will shortly. A combination of
strong winds... low relative humidity... and warm temperatures will
create the potential for rapid and erratic fire growth.

A Fire Weather Watch means that critical fire weather conditions
are forecast to occur. Listen for later forecasts and possible
red flag warnings.

Please advise the appropriate officials or fire crews in the
field of the red flag warning and the Fire Weather Watch for
portions of Southeast Arizona.
